Marie joined the firm in 2008 after practicing intellectual property law for over fifteen years, first with Bereskin & Parr and, more recently, with McCarthy Tétrault. Marie is a barrister and solicitor, and a registered trade-mark agent. Her practice extends to all aspects of branding and advertising law – and her expertise lies in helping businesses acquire, manage and defend their trade-mark rights in Canada and abroad. She has worked with and managed the trade-mark portfolios of many large corporations and is listed in Managing Intellectual Property’s Guide to the World’s Leading Trade Mark Law Practitioners.
Marie is frequently asked to write and to speak on the subject of branding and advertising law. She is fluent in both French and English and has practiced in both languages. She sits on the International Trademark Association (INTA) Bulletin Committee and was recently selected to chair the Bulletin’s News Subcommittee. She is also an active member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and the Toronto Intellectual Property Group (TIPG).
Marie obtained her common and civil law degrees from McGill University in 1991 and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1994. While at McGill, she was the Comments Editor of the McGill Law Journal. Subsequently, as part of her articles, Marie clerked with Madam Alice Desjardins of the Federal Court of Appeal. She received a B.Sc. from Queen’s University in 1987, specialising in Life Sciences.
