Iain MacKinnon joined Chitiz Pathak LLP in 2007 as counsel to the firm. His practice focuses on corporate/commercial litigation and media/intellectual property law issues. Iain has significant experience litigating a broad range of matters, including: commercial contract matters; debtor-creditor disputes; shareholder and partnership disputes; securities compliance and takeover bids; information technology and internet issues; wrongful dismissal and employment matters; and professional liability and negligence cases. Previously, Iain worked as a litigator at McCarthy Tétrault LLP and Goodmans LLP, where he practiced in the areas of corporate/commercial, intellectual property, employment, and professional liability, representing a number of major Canadian corporations in litigation matters. Iain regularly acts for major media organizations, including CBC and Quebecor Media with respect to defamation, publication bans, search warrants, subpoenas, and access to court documents. A portion of Iain’s practice also involves acting for writers, film/TV producers, broadcasters, and advertising agencies with respect to intellectual property issues, and commercial and production agreements. Iain fully understands and appreciates the needs and perspectives of in-house counsel. Iain spent five years as in-house counsel at CBC, where he advised senior management and internal clients on legal strategies, risks, and issues with respect to business operations, program production, joint ventures, partnerships, corporate policies and governance, merchandising, sponsorship, sporting events, and broadcast rights. After acquiring his B.A. Honours in English Literature at the University of Western Ontario, Iain completed his LL.B. at Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1997. Iain often speaks at conferences and is a member of the Advocates’ Society and the Canadian Media Lawyers’ Association
